PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome the disadvantage of causing a recording failure due to contact of a floating part with a recording head by preventing a sheet material from being floated due to air remainder even in the case of conveying an air impermeable sheet material using a belt. SOLUTION: In this sheet material conveying device, the sheet material is sucked to a conveying belt and conveyed. A means for sucking the sheet material to the conveying belt is a suction means for sucking the sheet material sequentially from the leading end of the sheet material 18 in the conveying direction toward the trailing end and from one point at the leading edge to both side parts in the conveying width direction, or from one side end in the width direction at the leading edge of the sheet material in the conveying direction toward the trailing end and from one side end toward the other side end.
