PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a recorder employing a plurality of kinds of recording media such as a booklet, a cutform paper, and the like, in which quick and exact recording operation is ensured regardless of the kind of recording media. SOLUTION: In a printer 10 comprising second transfer rollers 23A-23F displaceable according to the thickness of the recording medium and recording an image on the recording medium, roller displacement sensors 57A-57F for detecting the position or displacement in the direction perpendicular to the recording surface of the recording medium are provided for the second transfer rollers 23A-23F, and a decision is made whether the recording medium is a booklet having a binding portion or a cutform paper based on the position or displacement of the second transfer roller 23A-23F detected by the roller displacement sensor 57A-57F.
