PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To acquire an image at a level compliant to an original image without making an entire machine down even if one data system that reads documents is down. SOLUTION: The image reader is provided with: a photoelectric conversion element that has a plurality of light spectrum sensitivity characteristics and reads an original image by receiving reflection light or translucent light from an original; image data reading means for outputting a read image from the photoelectric conversion element as image data for each of the light spectrum sensitivity characteristics; and a selection means that drives one image data reading means in the plurality of image data reading means, selects and drives another image data reading means if the one image data reading means fails.
