A washing appliance comprising a cabinet (203), a wash system slidably mounted within said cabinet in such a manner that it may be withdrawn horizontally out of said cabinet for access thereto, said wash system including an open top wash chamber (201) adapted to accommodate items to be washed and within which wash liquid is circulated, said wash chamber having a top peripheral rim (19), means for introducing and circulating wash liquid within said chamber, and means for evacuating wash liquid from said chamber, a wash chamber closure (217) mounted in the top of said cabinet, which closure covers the open top of said wash chamber on retraction of the wash chamber (201) into said cabinet, said closure being mounted in the top of said cabinet by mechanical means and said closure having peripheral means which cooperate with said rim to prevent egress of wash liquid from the wash chamber (201) when it is lowered from a raised position, and means for raising said closure prior to withdrawal of the wash system from the cabinet and means for lowering said closure on retraction of said wash system into said cabinet comprising a cam surface (266,267) and a corresponding cam follower (268,269), wherein the cam surface (266,267) engages the cam follower (268,269) such that on withdrawal of the wash system from the cabinet (203) the closure (217) is raised by the action of the cam surface (266,267) on the cam follower (268,269).
