In a reclining and platform rocking chair, the chair can only be reclined on rocking it to its extreme forward position, in which nose 132 strikes base 10 and releases stub shaft 116, from slot 142 in locking link 130, thus enabling the leg rest lazy-tong linkage to extend, as the occupant exerts rearward pressure on the seat link 50 end back rest 42. The seat moves rearwardly about pivots 60 and 86 and bell crank 84, 94, swings to extend leg rest 46. The rearward motion of the seat 44 compresses spring 198 (Fig. 5) to overcome the action of inverted U-shaped coil spring 178 and turn hook link 166 about its pivot 172 to press roller 170 resiliently against edge guide 158d formed on hook bracket 158. In the semi-reclined position the rocking motion makes roller 170 track to and fro along guide 158d. The chair can only be moved into the fully reclined position by rocking it to the extreme forward position, in which roller 170 enters slot 158b and the consequential rotation of hook link 166 releases hook 176 from angle iron 184, which is rigid with carrier link 66. Carrier link 66 is accordingly released to turn about pivot 72 and bring the chair into the fully reclined position, in which the angle included between the seat and back rest is increased. Before the chair is moved into the fully reclined position, the roller 170 can be released from slot 158b by downward pressure exerted on the leg rest 46, to reduce the force exerted by spring 198 by slight forward displacement of the seat 44. Spring 178 may thus overcome the action of spring 198. Hook link 166 is locked to prevent release of roller 170 during the transition to the fully reclined position by parts 184, 186 engaging its upper end. In the fully reclined position hook 186 engages pin 168 to limit the rearward inclination of the chair. In another form (Figs. 11-13, not shown) hook link (1661) is manually actuated by means of a handle (220) and a toggle link (216). On returning the chair to the upright position part of the leg rest may operate the handle (220) to alter the position of the hook link (1661).
