STARTER OF ENGINE OF VEHICLE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter of an engine capable of securely re-starting the engine when the engine is automatically stopped while a vehicle is running.

SOLUTION: An ECU 2 mounted on the vehicle automatically stops the engine even while the vehicle is running and re-starts the engine in an automatic stop state. The ECU changes over an automatic transmission mechanism from a drive state to a neutral state when the requirements for the automatic stop of the engine are satisfied. Also, when the requirements for the re-start of the engine are satisfied and the vehicle is determined to be running based on the detected results of a vehicle speed sensor, the ECU controls the automatic transmission mechanism from the neutral state to the drive state at a prescribed timing in a prescribed re-start instability period between a time when a piston rotates in a normal direction when the engine is re-started and a time when the piston of a cylinder in an intake stroke is passed through a compression stroke top dead point coming first when the engine is stopped.
