摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a decoding apparatus and a method thereof for decoding symbols each comprising a set of the number of consecutive nonsignificant factors (zero run length) and significant factors (levels) succeeding to them at high speed. SOLUTION: A multiple stage pipeline comprising a level decoding section 203, a DPCM decoding section, a serial parallel decoding section 205 decodes the significant factors of each symbol and FFs 211, 212, 213 transmit a factor identification signal for representing types of the factors processed by each stage of the multiple stage pipeline synchronously with the multiple stage pipeline. A run length decoding section 102 outputs the factor identification signal in response to each symbol and uses a HOLD signal to control supply of the symbols to the pipeline in response to the zero run length of each symbol. Then the serial parallel conversion section 205 outputs the significant factors decoded by the pipeline in combination with the nonsignificant factors in response to the received factor identification signal.
