PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a recording head to a height appropriate to a printing object by precisely measuring the thickness of the printing object such as a printed board. SOLUTION: The printing object 24 placed on a table 22 is scanned by a height detection sensor 18 in a straight line direction. The thickness of the printing object 24 is measured from the continuous sampling result of the scanning. A gap to the printing object 24 of a head part 4 is adjusted to be a proper value. A controller classifies each sampling value of scanning data to one inspection point P among inspection points P set by every predetermined range, according to a size of the value. It is detected which inspection point among the inspection points P includes the sampling values most. The thickness of the printing object 24 is detected from an average value of the sampling values falling in the inspection point P including the largest number of the sampling values.
