PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photo image processing method correcting colors without being affected by color failure while not relying on a threshold value for eliminating high saturation pixels by rules of thumb and an LATD exposure system which should take into account a weighting condition. SOLUTION: The photo image processing method includes: a film image input step of reading a film image by an imaging element and generating color image data; a step of generating a density histogram by each RGB color component from the color image data; a relative companding processing step of relatively applying companding processing to the density histogram; a step of calculating and working out a relative companding rate at which an RGB superimposed area subjected to the relative companding processing is maximized; a step of calculating and working out an evaluation value of the reliability with respect to the relative companding rate; a step of calculating and working out a correction companding ratio on the basis of the evaluation value; and a step of applying conversion processing to the RGB component of each pixel of the color image data on the basis of the correction companding rate.
