PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform integral control so as to prevent saturation of a line sensor. SOLUTION: The focus detecting device includes the line sensor which is provided with a plurality of regions, each having a plurality of pixels, and photoelectrically converts and integrates subject light received by each pixel and then outputs the result as an image signal; monitor sensors, disposed adjacent to some of the plurality of regions of the line sensor and used to output as a monitor signal, an amount of light received in adjacent regions; and a control means for terminating the integration by the line sensor, when the monitor signal of each monitor sensor has reached the predetermined termination value; and a saturation detecting means for detection, based on the output image signal from the line sensor whether a saturation image signal is present. When the saturation detecting means detects a saturated image signal, the control means alters the termination value so that the monitor signal reaches the termination value more quickly and causes the line sensor to perform integration again.
