The method involves measuring and evaluating the surface-specific heat radiation and/or the surface-related radiation temperature in an area of separated chippings in a milling cutter, after the separation of chippings from a workpiece in different operating points. Temperature distribution curves are determined by comparing the operating points with one another or with a calibration value. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for determining the wear condition of a milling cutter, while dry milling the workpiece using a temperature measuring device.
