PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-step index type plastic optical waveguide that excels in mass productivity and that can be achieved at low cost. SOLUTION: The multi-step index type optical waveguide 1 is equipped with a clad 2 that is composed of transparent plastic and a core 3 that is installed in the clad 2 and composed of transparent plastic having a higher refractive index than the constituting material of the clad 2, wherein the core 3 is provided with a plurality of concentric layers 3A-3C which are lower in refractive index toward the outer circumference. This multi-step index type optical waveguide 1 is such that the core 3 and the clad 2 are integrally molded by multicolor extrusion. The integral molding of the core and the clad by multicolor extrusion makes it possible to manufacture the multi-step index type plastic optical waveguide with high productivity and at low cost.
