PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrodeless fluorescent lamp wherein mercury vapour pressure is controlled over a range of an operating state especially including low ambient temperature and dimming. SOLUTION: This electrodeless lamp comprises a bulb-like lamp envelope containing inert gas and a vaporizable filling metal and having a concave dimple, an electromagnetic coupler placed into a the reentrant cavity, and a cold spot structure constituted for a low temperature, low duty cycle operation and a room temperature, 100% duty cycle operation. In some embodiment, the cold spot structure comprises a dimple with a thin sidewall in the lamp envelope. A shield is placed near the dimple to control the cold spot temperature in further embodiment. In the added embodiment, the cold spot structure comprises a heat sink attached to an exhaust pipe of the lamp envelope and thermally insulated from a lamp base. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
