PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the surface of a magnetostrictive material formed of an alloy essentially consisting of a rare earth element(s) and iron and obtained by a powder metallurgy process hard to be oxidized over a long period. SOLUTION: A compact is subjected to presintering under the conditions satisfying the pressure of≤1.33 Pa(10<SP>-2</SP>Torr) and the temperature of 1,200 to 1,400°C, and is thereafter subjected to pressure sintering under the conditions satisfying the pressure of 10 to 150 MPa and the temperature of 1,100 to 1,300°C with gaseous argon or gaseous nitrogen as a pressure medium.
