PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel tank for an automobile and a manufacturing method thereof, having high fuel penetration preventive performance and enough rigidity and facilitating manufacturing. SOLUTION: According to this manufacturing method, this fuel tank for an automobile is formed by uniting the peripheral edges of openings of an upper tank 10 and a lower tank 20 which are split-formed, and integrally joining the same. The upper tank 10 and the lower tank 20 are formed of three layers, respectively: an inner resin layer 11, 21; a barrier layer 13, 23 for preventing the penetration of fuel; and outer resin layers 12, 22. In the upper tank and the lower tank, projecting parts 15, 25 are integrally formed from the inner resin layers toward the inside of the tank, projecting parts 16, 26 are integrally formed from the outer resin layers toward the outside of the tank, and outer peripheral joining flanges 17, 27 of peripheral edges of the respective openings of the upper tnak and the lower tank are welded to each other to form the tank.
