PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform stable detection by eliminating variations in a result of detection of dust (abnormal pixels) depending on modes in executing reading in one mode selected from among a plurality of reading modes. SOLUTION: In reading an original document with an RGB 3-line CCD, a parameter required for correction processing is always set for all the three lines irrespective of the setting of the reading mode to acquire a reference pixel signal (a pixel signal obtained by reading a dust detection reference plate), and an abnormal value due to the dust generated in the signal is detected (S101-103). If the dust is detected, a screen of caution or selection is displayed to enable selecting reading cancel (S106, 107). In executing original document reading, in accordance with the reading mode set by a user, a parameter is reset if the mode is different from that of dust detection, and reading is executed (S108, 109).
