PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To record an animation to make the most of a speed performance of an external recording medium used, in an electronic camera apparatus provided with an animation photographing function. SOLUTION: Prior to the animation photography, a data write speed of an installed recording medium 20 is measured or gained (S2 to S5, S6). The speed performance ("high speed", "normal", "low speed") of the recording medium is judged from the measured or gained data write speed (S7). When the animation is photographed, the judged speed performance is moved to a buffer batch recording mode if it is "low speed", it is moved to a ring buffer recording mode if it is "normal", it is moved to a stream recording mode if it is "high speed", respectively, and an animation data is recorded into the recording medium 20 by different animation recording methods (S11, S12, S13). An upper limit of a settable picture-recording quality does not need to be arranged to a low level quality fitting to the recording medium with the low speed performance. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
