A method for dispensing an adhesive to a substrate without contact between the adhesive dispenser and the substrate. The method includes spacing the liquid discharge outlets (34) of a dispensing nozzle (28) above a substrate (12), moving the substrate (12) beneath the outlets (34), opening a valve to dispense a series of spaced apart adhesive beads (42) from the outlets, coalescing the beads (42) to form a film layer, and closing the valve to stop the flow of adhesive from the nozzle (28).
