A vamp having a toe portion, two spaced flank portions at its rear end and a reentrant between the two flank portions is shaped so that the toe portion 10 of a similar vamp can lie in close proximity to the edges 14, 15 of the re-entrant to minimise wastage of material when cutting the vamps from a sheet of upper material. The vamps may have small cut outs 17 on either side of the base 14 of the re-entrant. If the toe portion of the vamp is blunt the base of the re-entrant is straight. The depth D2 of the re-entrant is somewhat greater than one third of the width L2 of the vamp. A tongue (not shown) of cheaper material than the vamp is sewn to the base 14 of the re-entrant. |
