A cyanine compound of the following general formula (I) that is suitable to an optical recording material for use as in a recording layer of an optical recording medium capable of laser beam recording and reproduction. This cyanine compound exhibits appropriate pyrolytic behavior for realizing especially sensitivity capable of coping with high-speed recording. (I) (wherein each of the ring A and ring B is an unsubstituted or substituted benzene ring or naphthalene ring; each of R1 and R2 independently is a C₁-C₄ alkyl or an unsubstituted or substituted benzyl with the proviso that at least one of the R1 and R2 is an unsubstituted or substituted benzyl; X is O, S or NY; each of Y, Y₁ and Y₂ independently is a hydrogen atom or C₁-C₃₀ organic group; Z is a hydrogen atom, halogen atom or cyano group; An^m- is an m-valent anion; m is an integer of 1 or 2; and p is a coefficient for maintaining charge neutrality).
