PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-size reactor which has a large volume for the amount of a catalyst present in the reactor while the internal volume for housing a heat exchanger therein is large. SOLUTION: This reactor has a stepped zone of an axial flow type for a highly endothermic or exothermic reaction. The reactor comprises a narrow part within a catalyst bed between an upper zone Za and a lower zone Zb, whereby a heat exchanger can be housed in a reactor for an endothermic or exothermic reaction in a gas phase and/or a liquid phase, particularly for oligomerization of a C2-C12 fraction for the production of a diesel fraction.
