PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an error correction unit which carries out the processes accompanying error corrections at a high speed, using a comparatively small circuit scale. SOLUTION: This error correction unit has a buffer memory 1 for storing the product codes of n2 line n1 column, an error correction section 5 for making corrections for 4 encoding columns in parallel at the same time, and a bus control section 2 for reading the product codes of 4 lines from the buffer memory 1 for transferring it to the error correction section 5 when correcting in the C1 direction. The bus control section 2 repeats the 4 line 4 column transfer which reads the 4 codes, arranged in parallel to transfer it to the error correction section 5 for each line, by shifting four codes each time in the row direction.
