PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens which has a compact design composed of fewer lenses, and exhibits excellent optical performance over the entire area with a variable magnification ratio of almost four times, and also to provide optical equipment which has the zoom lens. SOLUTION: The zoom lens includes a negative first lens group, a positive second lens group, and a positive third lens group. In the zoom lens, the lens closest to an object in the second lens group, which is highly sensitive, is composed of a single lens so as to reduce optical performance variation due to thickness tolerance.
