A first magnetic field sensor e.g. Hall effect sensor (24) detects a magnetic field produced by a magnet (18). A second magnetic field sensor (26) is separated from the first magnetic field sensor for independently detecting the magnetic field, such that strength of the magnetic field is changed according to the movement of plates (20,22). The plates move in response to the movement of a pedal shaft (14). An independent claim is included for a pedal position detecting method.
