PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element which emits light having a short wavelength light in high light emission efficiency to give blue light having high color purity, and to provide a metal complex compound which realizes the same. SOLUTION: This metal complex compound of specific structure having a partial structure which has a tridentate chelate ligand and cyano groups as ligands. And the organic electroluminescent element nipping one or more organic thin film layers comprising one or several layers having at least a light-emitting layer between a pair of electrodes, wherein at least one layer of the organic thin film layers contains the metal complex compound and emits light by applying an electric voltage between both the electrodes.
