A hydrogen-oxygen recombination means for a sealed accumulator comprises a fluid chamber having a port through which fluid communication is effected with the interior of the accumulator, hydrogen-oxygen recombination effecting means in said chamber, an externally actuatable valve capable of controlling the passage of gas and water through said port and flash-suppressing means capable of controlling the rate at which the gases contact the recombinationeffecting means. A typical embodiment, Fig. 2, comprises a fluid chamber 32 bolted to the underside of battery lid 21, the joint being sealed by elastomeric gasket 42. The recombination means comprises pellets of palladinized alumina 63 affixed to carbon resistance heater 61. The flash suppressing means 65 may comprise 12 mesh particles of rod or bead shape surrounding the catalyst to a depth of “-inch. The particles may be in a foraminous container and may be coated with P.T.F.E. Valve 52 is normally closed by spring 35 but on insertion in the recharging rack (not shown) it is forced open by engagement with socket 55. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4 the recombination means is a heated wire 77 and the flash suppressing means is a gas-permeable membrane 75 which minimizes the pressure difference across the valve. The membrane may be of fluorinated vinyl polymer. In Fig. 6 (not shown), is illustrated a device similar to that in Fig. 2 but arranged for use with two adjacent cells of a multi-cell accumulator. Two ports 84 and 85 are controlled by valves 91 and 92 activated by pressing a single plunger against a spring. The valves are opened and closed by rotation of a cam 100. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 8 the top of the accumulator 121 is formed into a screw collar 105 surrounding the fluid passage 107. During normal use valve 108 activated by spring 110 closes the passage. For charging, plunger 130 is screwed upwards before housing 120 is screwed on to collar 105. Plunger 130 is then screwed down, opening valve 108 and allowing recombination means 125 to function.
