Spring sensing members 36 are arranged in at least two groups which are differently inclined to a perforated card to be sensed, so that during relative movement between members 36 and the card, all forces exerted on the card by members 36 cancel out, except those perpendicular to the card. The card may be partly inserted manually, and on rotation of a handle fixed to shaft 42, cams 50 drive a platen 32 carrying a printed circuit board 38 and a perforated insulating board 40 defining a cardreceiving slot towards the members 36. At the same time a pin 72 on shaft 42 drives a card feed roller through a segment gear 66 and an intermediate gear 74. A further pin on shaft 42 may operate a microswitch to control the reader or operate a card feed motor. Cams 50 may be arranged to impart a double wiping action to members 36 on circuit board 38. |
