Alkylene sulphides are prepared by reacting at least one alkylene oxide with at least one sulphur donating compound which contains bivalent sulphur, and is gaseous under the reaction conditions, in the presence of a Lewis base catalyst dissolved in an organic solvent. The alkylene oxide starting materials are preferably compounds of general formula <FORM:1092610/C2/1> wherein R, R1, R2 and R3 may be the same o different and represent H atoms, aryl groups or linear lower alkyl or cycloalkyl groups of up to 10 carbon atoms. The sulphur-donating compound is preferably COS or CS2. Preferred catalysts include NaF, NaI, KI, LiCl and MgO. The reaction may be carried out by dissolving the catalyst in an organic solvent, adding a free halogen or halogenater organic compound to the catalyst system and passing a gaseous mixture of alkylene oxide and sulphur compound in the molar ratio of between 1:0.2 to 1:10 through the liquid bed catalyst at temperatures between 100 DEG and 300 DEG C. and at pressures between 5 mm. Hg and atmospheric. |
