PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cation-modified galactomannan polysaccharide which, if blended to a hair treating composition, gives the excellent conditioning effect and the wettish good touch and softness after the drying, and which, if blended to a skin cosmetic composition such as a body detergent, gives the conditioning effect and the use touch improved by the emulsion performance. SOLUTION: The cation-modified, purified galactomannan polysaccharide is obtained by introducing a specific, quaternary nitrogen-containing group to a part of hydroxy groups contained in the purified galactomannan that has a galactomannan content of 85% by mass or more and that is obtained by purifying a crude galactomannan which is obtained from the endosperm part in a seed of fenugreek of Trigonella foenum-graecum and which is constituted with the principal chain having the constitutional unit of mannose and with the side chain of a galactose unit, with the compositional ratio of mannose and galactose being 1:1; and the cosmetic composition contains this cation-modified, purified galactomannan polysaccharide.
