PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface treating agent which enables imparting excellent hydrophobicity to a powder and improving wash-down properties. SOLUTION: The surface treating agent comprises a polymer containing a monomer (A) represented by formula (1) (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is hydrogen or a 1-3C alkyl group; R<SP>2</SP>is a 4-22C alkylene group; X<SP>1</SP>is an -NH- group or oxygen; and M<SP>1</SP>is hydrogen or a monovalent inorganic or organic cation) as a constituting monomer.
