PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head capable of securing electrical insulation between a magneto-resistance effect element and a pair of upper and lower magnetic shielding layers sufficiently while improving electromagnetic conversion characteristics including the PW50 of the magneto-resistance effect element, etc. SOLUTION: The thin film magnetic head 1 is equipped with: a magneto-resistance effect element 10; and a pair of magnetic shielding layers 23, 26 which hold the magneto-resistance effect element 10 therebetween, and the thin film magnetic head 1 is configured so that read gap layers 24, 25 having electrical insulation are provided respectively at sides of respective magnetic shielding layers 23, 26 between the element 10 and a pair of the respective magnetic shielding layers 23, 26, and at least one of the read gap layers 24, 25 is a multilayered lamination insulator, and the multilayered lamination insulator is constituted by laminating an insulating soft magnetic layer 24b and an non-magnetic insulating layer 24a alternately.
