A method of making nanostructured surfaces by (a) making an aqueous mixture comprising (i) a non-chromonic phase comprising a water-soluble polymer and (ii) a chromonic phase comprising a chromonic material; (b) applying said mixture onto the surface of a substrate; and (c) allowing said mixture to dry.
