<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine capable of improving conversion rate of HC desorbed from HC adsorbent. <P>SOLUTION: Exhaust gas flows through catalyst 6 having oxidation function, heat storage material 7, and the HC adsorbent 8 in this order when starting the engine while it is cold, and exhaust gas flows through the HC adsorbent 8, the heat storage material 7, and the catalyst 6 having oxidation function in this order after heating the engine. Temperature of the catalyst 6 is quickly raised up to activation temperature when starting the engine while it is cold, and rise of temperature of the HC adsorbent 8 is made slow to prolong an HC absorption possible period. After that, direction of flow of exhaust gas is changed and heat is supplied to the catalyst 6 from the heat storage material 7 to convert HC desorbed from the HC adsorbent 8 by the catalyst 6 while suppressing reduction of temperature of the catalyst 6. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
