PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To change setting contents and to turn on/off a power source automatically in accordance with the status of a portable telephone set. SOLUTION: The portable telephone set 1 is capable of automatically setting the sound volume of a call arrival sound to be outputted in accordance with the present time measured by a clock unit 12a, the present location detected by a location detection unit 15, the ambient lightness detected by a CCD 8 and an imaging processing unit 16, the ambient temperature measured by a temperature sensor 10 and a temperature measuring unit 17, and the ambient sound volume detected by a microphone 6 and a sound input/output unit 18 and further is capable of switching to a silence mode and switching from power-on to power-off. If the kinds of a call arrival sound and a call arrival waiting image are set and registered in accordance with various conditions, the kinds of the call arrival sound and the call arrival waiting image are also set and changed in accordance with the status.
