[Also in Division H2] The segments of a radial face commutator have a conductive material portion forming the brush engaging surface supported by a second material acting as a heat sink. The commutator is made by placing an annular copper disc 11 which is formed with a flange 14 at its inner periphery and equiangularly spaced U-shaped radial flanged recesses 15 at its outer periphery. An annular aluminium disc 16 having U-shaped slots for co-operating with flanges 15 is engaged with copper disc 11. The assembly is pressed to provide radial grooves 17 which have a depth greater than the thickness of the two discs and thereby provide ribs 18 on the exposed surface of copper disc 11. Lugs 19 are formed on the exposed surface of the aluminium disc and a synthetic resin support body is moulded on to the aluminium disc. The face of the copper disc is machined to remove ribs 18 and thereby separate the segments of the commutator. In a modification the aluminium disc is replaced by a plurality of pre-formed sintered iron segments which are brazed to the copper disc, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). When assembled in an electrical machine the connections to the winding are made at recesses 15. |
