The present invention refers to a novel IRES (internal ribosome entry sites) element: the IRES-ZmHsp101, which has a sequence corresponding to the 5?? untranslated region (5??UTR) of maiz Hsp101 mRNA, or to fragments of said sequence. The aforementioned sequence may be useful for the monocistronic, bicistronic or polycistronic expansion of recombinant proteins in eukaryots which are exclusively capable of producing recombinant proteins by means of monocistronic constructions. A further embodiment of a vegetable IRES is that it promotes the study of cap-independent translation mechanisms (mRNA structures and linking factors) pertaining to plants.
