The invention relates to the field of aeronautics. The invention consists in replacing all or part of the cabin windows of the aircraft with virtual windows (20) displaying a realistic image of the landscape that the passengers would see through a real window. The aforementioned images are provided by a pre-recorded database (10) which may contain pre-filmed or -photographed clear-weather images or ground data from which realistic synthesis images of the landscape below can be displayed. The images are provided according to the position of the aircraft in order to correspond effectively, and at least approximately, to the terrain below.
