PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface acoustic wave element with excellent characteristics capable of reducing ripples and degradation of an insertion loss while holding a wide passband width, and a communication device using the same. SOLUTION: The surface acoustic wave element is provided with a first surface acoustic wave element (A) in which three IDT electrode groups 21, 22, and 23 are arranged on a piezoelectric substrate 1, and a first isolation electrode is arranged between at least two of first IDT electrodes in the IDT electrode groups 21, 22, and 23; and a second surface acoustic wave element (B) in which two IDT electrode groups 24, 25 and the first isolation electrode are arranged, and a second isolation electrode is arranged to at least either of a space between the IDT electrode groups 24, 25 and a space between the IDT electrode groups 24, 25 and first reflector electrodes 4, 5. The two IDT electrode groups 21, 23 of the first surface acoustic wave element (A) are cascaded with the second isolation electrode. The electrode finger pitch of the first isolation electrode is set wider than that of the adjacent first IDT electrode.
