PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress adverse influence due to paper dust generated at the widthwise ends of a paper sheet without making a device larger. SOLUTION: Foamed elastic members 47 formed of a material that imparts elasticity are provided on guide fences regulating widthwise end positions of the paper sheet P stacked and retained in a paper feeding tray for stacking and retaining the paper sheet P. The paper sheet P is fed, with abutting surfaces 49 abutted on the widthwise ends of the paper sheet P, the abutting surfaces exposing recessed parts 48 formed by the foam contained in the foamed elastic members 47. Paper dust D is thereby generated at the widthwise ends of the paper sheet P by the friction between the paper sheet and abutting surfaces 49, and this paper dust D generated is then collected in the recessed parts 48 exposed on the abutting surfaces 49.
