PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a synchronization separation circuit capable of separating a synchronizing signal from a different type of a video signal by one and the same synchronization separation circuit and a video display device having the synchronization separation circuit in the synchronization separation circuit for using a first signal generated by inputting a video signal to a filter circuit and a second signal generated from the first signal to separate a synchronizing signal from the video signal and the video display device having the synchronization separation circuit. SOLUTION: This synchronization separation circuit is provided with a signal discriminating means for discriminating the type of a video signal, and a switching means for deciding whether to make the video signal a first signal as it is or to input the video signal to the filter circuit and generate a first signal.
