1,201,538. Key cutting machine. R. C. SPAIN. 23 April, 1968 [17 July, 1967], No. 19157/68. Headings B3K and B3L. A hand-operated key cutting machine has a holding device 97 for holding a key blank 171 while a broach 47, or a rotary cutting wheel, is driven by a pivoting handle 15 to cut the notches. The holding device 97 is rotatable to a position 22 degrees on either side of a central position to enable the notches in the key to be cut perpendicular thereto or at an angle in each direction, and is locked in its selected position by a spring-biased pin 111. To provide three different depths of cut the twelve teeth 51-62 of the broach 47 are divided into three groups of 4, the handle 15 moving the broach forward one tooth at a time by means of a spring-biased lever 41 engaging with notches 71-82 until a stop-plate 23 engages with grooves 91-93 at every fourth increment of movement of the broach. A hole may be provided in a side plate of the machine to view the side of the broach to ascertain the cutting depth. The key blank is located in a carrier 160 by interengaging studs and notches and the carrier and key blank is mounted in the holding device to allow lateral feeding of the key blank to allow successive notches to be cut. To achieve this the carrier 160 has in its underside a set of rack teeth engaging with a pinion. During a machining operation rotation of the pinion is prevented by a spring pulling the end of the pinion into an internally-toothed recess. In a modification the cutting may be carried out in a factory installation by rotating cutting wheels. In cutting a key from an existing cut key a guide follows the notches of the existing key while a cutting wheel cuts corresponding notches in the key blank. In this type of operation two holding devices 97 are used.
|
