[Also in Division C3] Laminates may be prepared from polypropylene which has been treated to improve bond formation with adhesives by subjecting it for a period of at least one second to nitrous oxide which has been excited by a glow discharge therein. The nitrous oxide may be excited by applying a radio frequency current to a coil surrounding a tube by which the nitrous oxide passes to the polypropylene. The adhesive may be a polysulphide, silicone, polyamide or particularly epoxy resin adhesive. In an example aluminium sheets which have been degreased with trichloroethylene and etched with chromic acid are bonded to both sides of a polypropylene sheet which has been washed with acetone, treated with excited nitrous oxide and coated with an adhesive comprising diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and diethylaminopropylamine.</p> |
