PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent demagnetization and degauss of recording magnetization even when an external magnetic field is applied in any direction. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording and reproducing device has a head in which a magnetic field shield is installed near a main magnetic pole of a single magnetic pole head and a device cover 211 using a material having a magnetic field shielding effect in the whole or at a part of it. When a magnetic field is applied to the perpendicular direction to a recording medium, an influence of the magnetic field is alleviated by the magnetic field shield near the single magnetic pole head. At this time, the magnetic field shield may be optimized only to the magnetic field in the perpendicular direction. When the magnetic field is applied to the horizontal direction to the recording medium, the magnetic field which acts on the recording medium is removed by the device cover containing magnetic substances.
