In a colorimetric apparatus for testing fluid samples in which a sample is placed between a radiation source and photo-detector 122 whose output is supplied to a meter 42 located in the housing 12, a replaceable transparent card or slide member 32 representing a particular test is slidable in the housing and has indicia 32A marked thereon which provide a scale for the said test. Each test has its corresponding card containing the relevant indicia, and each card has a notch cut into its lower surface(32b) Fig.2 (not shown). This notch is engageable with a cam member (68A) which positions in the radiation path a filter corresponding to the particular test. The test sample is contained in a test tube which is moved into position to surround a probe 22. This probe contains a light guide 50 conveying light from a source across a cut-out 119-120 defining the absorption path to the photocell 122. The filter arrangement containing the different filters is placed between the light source and the end of the guide. The detector circuitry Fig.6 (not shown) includes two calibration potentiometers (202, 204) for adjusting the meter reading when two calibration samples of known strength are employed in a particular test. A balancing network (214-218) is provided at the input to an operational amplifier (206) to compensate for variations in detector sensitivity.
