A pre-formed, self-lubricating, self-supporting and continuous liner 6 for insertion into a bearing housing 1 or ball joint comprises a cup portion and circumferential wall portion extending upwardly from the cup-portion. In use the housing 1 is deformed by swaging so that the cup portion and wall portion of the liner 6 conform closely to the bearing surface of a bearing member (9, fig 1b) that is positioned within the housing 1. The liner 6 is preferably formed from a lubricating material or a mesh material that is impregnated with the lubricating material. During assembly of a bearing, the liner 6 is placed in a bearing housing 1 that incorporates a recess (2, fig 1a) which includes a cup section 3 and a conforming section 4, the bearing member (9, fig 1b) is placed into the housing 1 so that the liner 6 is positioned between the surfaces of the housing 1 and the bearing member (9, fig 1b), and the housing 1 is swaged so that the housing 1 and the liner 1 conform to the shape of the bearing member (9, fig 1b) thus preventing the bearing member (9, fig 1b) from being removed from the housing 1 during normal use. |
