[Also in Division E1] A windscreen 2 or other window or panel is mounted in an opening in a supporting structure 1 in which a flange 3 is provided around the opening and projects into the opening to provide a support for the windscreen, by applying to the flange or to that portion of the windscreen which overlaps the flange a strip of thermoplastic material 4 in which is embedded an electrical resistance wire, inserting the windscreen in the opening so that the strip is sandwiched between the flange and the windscreen and applying pressure to compress the strip and passing an electric current through the resistance wire to heat and soften the strip so that it forms an adhesive bond with the windscreen and the flange. The strip is preferably made of butyl rubber and has a rectangular cross-section. To protect the two contacting surfaces of the strip they may be covered with a removable polythene strip. A locating rib 6 is provided at the upper end of the flange for positioning the thermoplastic strip.</p> |
