1,212,001. Esters of methylolylmelamines. COATES BROS. & CO. Ltd. 7 Nov., 1967 [21 Feb., 1967],No. 50573/67. Addition to 1,116,858. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Monomeric triazinyl esters are prepared by reacting a compound of the formula in which A is a radical of the formula or -NH-CH 2 -O-R (wherein R is hydrogen or C 1-4 alkyl), with an ester of the formula R<SP>1</SP>O.CO.CH: CH.CO.OR<SP>2</SP>, in which R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen or a C 1-5 hydroxyalkyl group and R<SP>2</SP> is a C 1-10 alkyl group, in the presence of a natural or synthetic cation exchanger, in the acidic form. The reaction may be effected at 50-150‹ C. in the presence of an entraining agent using approximately equimolar amounts of reactants. Examples relate to the preparation of esters from hexamethoxy-methylmelamine and ethyl hydrogen maleate, butyl hydrogen maleate and butyl 2-hydroxyethyl maleate, using montmorillonite as catalyst. The esters may be copolymerized with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers (see Division C3).
