The proposed method for measuring distance to an object with small area of the reflecting surface consists in transmitting a pulse sounding signal, receiving the signal that is reflected from the object, determining the time interval between the instant of the transmission of the sounding signal andthe instant of the reception of the reflected signal. The distance is determined by the said time interval. The proposed method is distinctive by that, for the purpose to reduce power consumed by the equipment and increase accuracy in measuring distance, the phase of the sounding signal is adjusted, after the reception of the reflected signal, to excite the reflected signal with a resonance frequency that is different from the frequency of the sounding signal.
