The illuminated display backlighting system has a transparent element (1) adjacent to a surface (1a) to be illuminated. There is a light guide (2) with a translucent surface (2a). A 45 degree scattering reflector (3a) scatters light from a lamp (5). The framework for the display (6) holds several reflectors (4,4a) at right-angles to the display surface.
