Disclosed is a substrate for a thin film magnetic head comprising a ceramic substrate (1) having a major surface and an undercoat film (3) covering the major surface of the ceramic substrate. An electric/magnetic transducer is formed on the undercoat film. This substrate for a thin film magnetic head further comprises an intermediate layer (2) which is formed between the major surface of the ceramic substrate and the undercoat film. This intermediate layer (2) is composed of a material other than the aluminum oxide, and is so patterned as to have a part of the major surface of the ceramic substrate in direct contact with the undercoat film. |
